Ooey, gooey thick and rich healthy salted caramel sauce! This syrupy goodness is made with just a few simple ingredients. And best of all is refined-sugar free and secretly healthy.
This vegan salted caramel sauce recipe utilizes whole-food plant-based ingredients that add in tonsils of flavor not to mention nutrients and vitamins. Plus, unlike other caramel recipes that use tons of cane sugar, this recipe is for a healthy caramel sauce with honey! How healthy is that!
I put this healthy caramel syrup on absolutely everything. From baked oats and oatmeal, to waffles and pancakes, this healthy salted caramel belongs on everything!
Healthy Salted Caramel Sauce Ingredients
- Sunflower Butter: Replaces the traditional butter in caramel, plus it adds in tons of nutrients. And who doesn’t want peanut butter flavored caramel!
- Coconut Sugar: Replaces the traditional cane sugar in this caramel sauce. Coconut sugar is naturally low-glycemic and has a ton of minerals.
- Honey: make sure to use a local, good quality and ethically sourced honey. Or, to make this a vegan salted caramel sauce, you can use date syrup instead.
- Cashew Milk: adds in some richness and helps thin out the caramel. Linking my homemade cashew milk recipe HERE. I recommend making the low-calorie version to keep the calories down in this sauce!
- Salt: Obviously to make salted caramel you’re gonna need salt. I recommend using Pink Himalayan salt for added minerals and nutrients.
Substitutions
- Sunflower Butter: Tahini, peanut butter, cashew butter or any super smooth and slightly runny nut butter will work.
- Coconut sugar: Feel free to use date sugar or granulated monk fruit sugar from Lakanto for a sugar-free option.
- Honey: Date syrup or a sugar-free syrup will work here.
- Cashew Milk: Any plant milk will work here, such as almond milk, soy milk, oat milk etc.
Why this Vegan Salted Caramel is Healthy
I know you’re probably thinking that caramel could never be healthy! Well, think again. This caramel is made with sunflower butter and cashew milk. Both of these ingredients add in healthy fats, omega 3’s and tons of nutrients. But, most importantly, the fats help slow the sugar absorption in your body that comes from the honey and coconut sugar. Meaning that your insulin won’t spike as fast! So cool.
However, it doesn’t stop there. Honey and coconut sugar are packed with nutrients, minerals and vitamins. Additionally, honey has a host of phytonutrients – powerhouses in plants that protect it from harm and help heal any wounds. These phytonutrients are responsible for the antioxidants and antibacterial properties that honey has.
Just be sure to source a local honey from a farmer you trust!
Bottom line, this caramel syrup is nutritious and insanely delish!

I have a question… Will this recipe work if I used real dairy butter instead of sunflower or nut butters ?
Yasmeen Mariyah Ali says
Hi Susan! Unfortunately I can’t say for sure it that would work as I haven’t tested it myself. Let me know how it turns out though!
