Homemade Croutons Ingredients
Here’s everything you’ll need to make these homemade Italian croutons.
- Sourdough: I used a local sourdough bread from a baker in our area which sounds bougie. But the reason I’m saying this is that local, rustic bread always tastes best for making croutons.
- Olive oil: Highly recommend using a high quality olive oil as the flavor does shine through in the finished croutons.
- Spices: like italian herb seasoning, garlic, onion and kosher salt.
How to Make Homemade Croutons
These homemade garlic croutons couldn’t be easier to make.
- Start by preheating your oven to 450°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Chop your bread into even sized cubes and dump onto the prepared baking sheet. Sprinkle over all the spices, followed by a generous drizzle of olive oil.
- Using your hands, toss the croutons to thoroughly coat in oil. Then gently spread out on the sheet, so each crouton is evenly spaced out and resting flat.
- Bake the croutons in the oven for 6-8 minutes until golden in color. Let cool on the counter until room temp before using. Keep in mind that the croutons will continue to harden as they cool, so don’t over bake them!
FAQ’s
- How to store homemade croutons? Store them in an airtight glass tupperware or container in the pantry or on the counter.
- How long do homemade croutons last? Depending on how dry your croutons are, they should last up to 5 days. But personally, I think they taste best the same day you make them!
- Can you freeze homemade croutons? Yes, you definitely can! They’ll keep for up to 1 month in the freezer.
- Do croutons harden as they cool? Yes, they do, so take them out when they’re just developing a crust. They will continue to harden as they cool, leaving you with the perfectly crunchy croutons, with a chewy center.
- Is it important for croutons to cool before storing them? Any residual heat from the croutons will create steam in whatever container you store them in, which will make the croutons become soggy (and eventually moldy). So let them cool completely before storing them!
- Can I make homemade gluten-free croutons? Absolutely! Just use gluten-free bread. You may need to bake the croutons shorter or longer depending on how hard your bread is. So be sure to monitor your first batch closely!
