If you’re looking for an easy homemade dog treat recipe, your search ends here. These healthy homemade dog treats are made with pumpkin, peanut butter, and oat flour, for a perfectly soft but snappy treat that your dog will love!
I’m super picky about what foods Argos (our dog) eats, to the point that I think he has a better diet than I do haha. And these treats are no exception. They’re made with healthy ingredients like oats, pumpkin, peanut butter, and eggs. So not only do these treats taste good, but they also double as a little nutrient boost for your dog!
Whether you make these for your furry friend or gift them to someone, you can’t go wrong with these homemade peanut butter treats.
Ingredients For These Homemade Dog Treats
Listing everything you’ll need to make this homemade dog treat recipe.
- Oat flour: You can make your own oat flour at home by grinding up rolled oats, but I get lazy and prefer to buy it pre-ground.
- Pumpkin puree: Make sure the only ingredient is pumpkin, nothing else. You can also opt to use sweet potato puree, to make these into homemade sweet potato dog treats.
- Peanut butter: As with the pumpkin puree, make sure the only ingredient in the peanut butter is peanuts; no salt, added oils, sugar, etc. If you don’t want to use peanut butter, almond butter, sunflower butter, or even tahini are great substitutions.
- Eggs: You need just one egg; it helps bind the dough together and adds nutrients.
How to Make Homemade Dog Treats
Giving you a brief overview here, but as always, the full recipe is in the recipe card below.
- Begin by preheating the oven to 350°F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Add the pumpkin puree, peanut butter, and egg into a large mixing bowl. Whisk together well; it should be pale orange and thick and fluffy.
- Dump in the oat flour and mix as much as you can with a rubber spatula. Dump the dough out onto a clean counter or board and knead until the flour is fully incorporated.
- Roll the dough out using a rolling pin until ¼” thick. Keep in mind that these treats will not rise when they bake, so whatever thickness you roll them out to, will be the same thickness once they’re done baking. Use a dog bone cookie cutter to cut out dog bones in the dough. Place the treats on the prepared baking sheet. Ball the remaining dough together, roll it out, and repeat the process of cutting out the treats until no more dough is left.
- Bake the treats in the oven for 20 minutes, or until they’re just golden brown on the edges.
- Let cool completely before transferring to a glass tupperware. Store the treats in the fridge for up to one week.
A Few Notes…
- You can use a dog bone cookie cutter to make these treats look cute. But we typically cut the dough into small squares, which is less time intensive. Plus, the smaller treats are easier to use when you’re training!
- Keep in mind that the dough should be smooth and pliable and not sticky. So if needed, add an extra 3-4 tbsp of oat flour and knead it into the dough until it’s the right texture.
Storing These Treats
How long do homemade dog treats last? Do these treats need to be refrigerated? Answering your questions below!
I store these treats in glass tupperware in the fridge; they usually last 3 to 4 days in our house because Argos can’t get enough haha. But they should hold up well in the fridge for up to one week.
Because there is pumpkin and eggs in these treats, I would not store them on the counter/pantry as they could get mold.

I love this recipe as it whipped up so fast! I didn’t have a bone cookie cutter so I just used a gingerbread man cut out…ha! Our doggie loved it, thank you!

My dog is gobbling these up! I wonder about using a flax egg instead of the egg to extend their life? From a quick search sounds like flax is safe for dogs.

So freakin happy your dog loves these!! I know a few folks have tried this recipe with a flax egg and it’s turned out just as good 🙂

Are the treats supposed to be crunchy or soft? I made them and baked for 20 minutes but they are still soft/chewy, which is great, but I would like some also to be more crunchy. Could I cook longer to do so?

Could you use whole wheat flour?
