This creamy bowl of cinnamon sugar oatmeal is exactly what you need in the morning to warm you up! Think creamy vanilla oats topped with a layer of cinnamon sugar and cold creamy milk. Plus, this bowl is packed with protein, healthy fats and tons of omega 3’s!
Cinnamon Sugar Oatmeal Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need to make this bowl. Please keep in mind that the full list of ingredients is in the recipe card below.
- Quick oats: Duh! If you’re gluten-free feel free to use GF quick oats instead.
- Protein powder: I recommend adding in protein powder to this oatmeal recipe, as it not only adds in extra protein, but it also makes the oatmeal super creamy. However, this is totally optional.
- Sun butter: or any nut butter of choice! Almond butter, peanut butter and sunflower butter all pair really well with this oatmeal bowl. If you have a nut allergy, sunflower butter or tahini would be a great option.
- Cashew milk: I love the flavor and rich body of cashew milk (recipe linked HERE). But any higher fat plant milk, such as cashew, macadamia or oat milk will work for the best creamy results.
- Salt and Cinnamon: Salt and cinnamon in any oatmeal recipe is a must! The salt helps bring out the flavors in the oatmeal and the cinnamon adds warmth to this bowl.
How to make the Cinnamon Sugar Mixture
Making the cinnamon sugar mixture could not be any easier.
Simply mix together 1 tbsp of coconut sugar and 1 tsp of ceylon cinnamon and voila, you have cinnamon sugar. If you want to make this completely refined sugar-free, you can use Lakanto monk fruit sugar as a substitute.
Tips for Creamy Oatmeal
I know it’s a struggle to get your oatmeal super creamy, so I’ve rounded up my top 3 tips for you! If you want even more help to make oatmeal, click HERE to get the ULTIMATE guide to making creamy oatmeal.
But for now, here are three things you NEED to do to get creamy oatmeal.
- Cook the oatmeal in a mixture of water and milk: Please stop cooking your oats in water. Not only does it not make your oats creamy, the water adds zero flavor to the oats. Instead, I like to use half water and half milk (or all milk if I’m feeling fancy) to make my oats. The half milk, half water adds just enough richness to the oats without being overpowering. HOWEVER, if you’re using store-bought milk that isn’t super creamy, I would cook the oats in all milk!
- Cook nut butter into the oatmeal: Yet another one of my tricks to add flavor and creaminess to my oat bowls. And the best part is, you can use literally any type of nut or seed butter – although sunflower butter is my personal favorite.
- Slightly overcook the oats (trust): Yeah, it sounds weird, but hear me out. When you cook oats according to whatever is on the back of the oatmeal box, it’s usually still not cooked through. However, if you cook the oatmeal for at least 8 minutes, it’ll be super creamy, silky and soft. Ummm, how freakin good does that sound?
